Belmont University is currently accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. Under the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director for Broadcasting and Media Relations, this position serves as the institutional representative to the media for selected NCAA Division 1 athletic programs and plays a key role in the messaging and branding of Belmont University Athletics through various platforms to successfully promote its student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department. This position also assists with management of home athletic events, as assigned. Responsibilities include:
•Manages publicity and strategic communication as the primary contact for assigned sports and assumes all roles therein, including but not limited to: writing and editing content for press releases, feature stories, media guides, and game notes; designing media guides; scorekeeping; inputting and compiling statistics; submitting award nominations; etc. The position will also assist with coverage of other sports and events and will travel to select away events, as required.
•In collaboration with the Director of Athletic Marketing and Promotions, assists in the development and execution of a social media strategy for the athletic department, with day-to-day management of the main athletics social media accounts, to include: multi-platform content creation for placement across digital and social media channels, as well as in-venue and in-broadcast; graphic design; targeted messaging; scheduling; monitoring social media posts; etc.
•Develops and maintains relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets to increase coverage of Belmont athletic teams through pitching story ideas; scheduling interviews, responding to questions; organizing press conferences; managing and scheduling team media days to include team and individual photos; issuing press credentials;, and providing departmental information.
•Oversees game day and event management responsibilities for assigned sports, including: scheduling, training, and supervising game day staff and student workers; coordinating with campus partners to secure necessary audio/video equipment and staffing needs; supervising statistical crews to ensure accurate and timely in-game statistics for assigned sports.
•Assists in the management and archiving of departmental multimedia assets (print, photography, video, statistics, records, awards, press clippings, etc.) for media and historical records purposes.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field. Master’s preferred. Minimum three years of experience in the athletic communications/media relations field. Previous intercollegiate sports information experience preferred. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce compelling creative content. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Spark, Audition, etc.), NCAA Genius and CBS StatCrew statistical software, and social media management platforms (Hootsuite, Sprout, TweetDeck, or comparable). Experience with HTML and Sidearm, Netitor, XOS/Catapult, NeuLion, PrestoSports or comparable online content managements systems, as well as video editing software (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere). Knowledge of industry standards and trends regarding social media presentation, new platforms, and best means of engagement. Knowledge of sporting press box procedures, techniques, facilities and equipment. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences. Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Ability to train and manage student personnel, specifically graduate assistants and interns. Ability to work independently and approach projects with a creative, innovative mind. Thrives in an environment of teamwork, collaboration and hard work. Flexibility to travel and work extended hours, including games and events on evenings and weekends.
