The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz invites applications for the position of Director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation.
The Director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation, reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, oversees 17 NCAA Division III varsity sports teams, Wellness & Recreation programming, and the 57,000-square-foot Athletic & Wellness Center, built in 2006, Elting Gymnasium and natatorium and outdoor facilities.

We recently partnered with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), to promote inclusivity within our athletic programs. We offer a popular Outdoor Pursuits program that offers unique climbing, hiking, kayaking and camping opportunities, taking advantage of the region's rich outdoor assets

We have three committees, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, New Paltz Athletes of Color and the Wellness & Recreation Advisory Committee, to facilitate student input. Our students have expressed appreciation for how our Athletics, Wellness & Recreation department has responded with both in-person and remote opportunities this year, which illustrates our commitment to being responsive to student needs.
SUNY New Paltz competes within the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), United Volleyball Conference and the National Collegiate Equestrian Association. The Hawks have earned 22 conference titles, including 20 SUNYAC Championships, two team national championships in men's volleyball and two individual national championships in swimming in the past two decades. In 2018-19 we added Men's Lacrosse and an Equestrian Team.
Principal duties include: • Direct all areas of the Department of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation per the mission of the College and learning outcomes within Student Affairs • Plan, develop and implement policies and long-term strategic plans for both Athletics and Wellness & Recreation • Manage ongoing assessment of student learning, efficiencies and effectiveness of the department, its culture and environment, including diversity and inclusion • Oversee Department budgets (approximately $3 million) • Collaborate with Development and Alumni Relations on fund-raising and alumni engagement • Collaborate with Communication & Marketing on media relations, crisis communications, and overall marketing and branding strategy. • Collaborate with Undergraduate Admission on recruitment efforts • Recruit, hire, train and supervise Department staff (22 FTE including an associate director and two assistant directors, 14 part-time staff and 175 student staff). • Develop and Coordinate Diversity and Inclusion initiatives within the Department • Collaborate with other offices within Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management to enhance the student experience • Oversee compliance with NCAA, Title IX, SUNYAC, UVC and NCEA policies and procedures • Represent the Department at required NCAA, SUNYAC, UVC and NCEA meetings, campus and community events Complete all required NCAA, SUNYAC, UVC and NCEA and campus reports
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of successful leadership within Athletics and Wellness, including strategic planning and five years of supervisory and budgetary experience. The candidate must be able to adapt communication style and messaging to both internal and external audiences, have excellent project management skills, and be effective in managing multiple and competing priorities. The candidate must also have a high attention to detail and maintain clear and consistent records and documentation and an ability to maintain and effectively use data to support work and practices. A master's degree and eight years of coaching and progressive administrative experience is required. Experience working within a unionized environment preferred.
