NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship for Assistant to the AD/Assistant Coach.
Houghton College is looking to fill a two-year internship for Assistant Director of Athletics Administration and Diversity/Assistant Coach. The position will be available for 10 months during each of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. This internship is intended to promote ethnic minorities and women in intercollegiate athletics. Opportunities for professional development and mentoring are included as a part of the internship package. An orientation at the NCAA National Office will occur on July 28-29, 2020. The position will expose the selected individual to a broad experience in the Houghton College Department of Athletics, which is comprised of 18 varsity programs and serves more than 240 student-athletes (more than 30 percent of the college enrollment). In addition to administrative responsibilities, the individual will work with the head coach (sport TBD) in all areas of coaching and administration of the program.
The individual will be an active member of the department and would have regular opportunity to interact with student-athletes, coaches and staff members on a daily basis while also connecting with various departments outside athletics.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The position will include coaching responsibilities with the assigned sport as well as four administrative areas within the department: event management, compliance, communication, and diversity/inclusion.
Coaching (25%) Assist in all areas of team management, including recruiting, game and practice preparation, academic monitoring, scouting, player evaluation, and travel and budget management.
Event Management (20%) Assist the Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine and Administration with all aspects of site supervision and game management. Specific duties include communication with visiting teams in advance of home contests, management of online and printed visitors guide, game setup and game personnel management, welcoming opponents and officials, and supervision related to crowd control and sportsmanship.
Compliance (20%) Assist the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Communications with duties as assigned. Intern will be exposed to administration of student-athlete forms, monitoring of athletic eligibility, oversight of transfer paperwork, and rules education.
Communication (20%) Provide assistance in home game coverage, nominating athletes and teams for national awards, processing required conference and national office statistical reports, writing press releases, managing website and overseeing department and team social media accounts.
Diversity and Inclusion (15%) Work with the National Director of Athletics Engagement in an effort to make a recommendation to the Director of Athletics for strategies for increasing diversity within the athletic department at both the staff and student-athlete level. The intern will also have opportunity to support the National Director of Athletics Engagement in his work with the NCAA Common Ground.
Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and have experience in athletics administration.
Candidate must have strong interpersonal, writing, and organizational communication skills, and demonstrated skills with computer technologies. Experience and knowledge of sports statistical software (Stat Crew), photography and video editing, and graphic design are a plus, but not necessary.
