Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Director of Athletics at Arkansas Tech University sits as a member of the Executive Council and reports directly to the president. The director of athletics is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department and the supervision of the athletics department staff. The director of athletics is responsible to:
•In coordination with the Advancement office, coordinate fundraising and development activities for the department. •Be accountable for the compliance and fiscal stability of the athletics department. •Be the champion and primary caretaker of the athletics department’s strategic plan as well as oversee compliance with Title IX for the institution. •Promote effective communication among the institution’s president, staff, faculty, media, the public and students (particularly student-athletes). •Provide professional growth opportunities for athletics department staff. •Establish and coordinate departmental goals that are aligned with the Division II Strategic Plan, including the role athletics can play in strengthening the bond between the institution and the community. •Assure the athletic department fulfills NCAA standards and the accreditation standards of the Higher Learning Commission. •Establish and coordinate departmental goals that are aligned with the university’s vision, mission, and strategic plan. •Maintain communications with outside organizations that are vital to the athletics department’s operations, such as the NCAA, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Collegiate Woman Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Great American Conference, etc. •Take an active role in the GAC Conference and, as appropriate, in national affairs.
Other duties include: •Providing an environment of safety and well-being for student-athletes. •Ensuring academic integrity. •Supervising the athletic department staff. •Supervising the management and maintenance of athletic facilities. •Overseeing all aspects of the athletic department within the guidelines set forth by the state of Arkansas, the university, the Great American Conference, and the NCAA II. •And other duties as assigned by the president.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of the NCAA Division II rules and regulations
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to manage multiple sports, departments, and facilities
Required Education & Experience:
Masters Level Degree
Three (3) years’ experience in athletic administrative leadership at the collegiate level
Interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with internal and external constituents at the local level and state levels and beyond
Experience with budget oversight and management
Experience in managing coaches and athletic staff
Experience with volunteer support groups and governing boards
Preferred Education & Experience:
Five (5) plus years’ of experience in athletic administration
Collegiate experience in coaching
Experience in successful fund raising
Background in NCAA Compliance
Experience at the NCAA Division II level
