ABOUT THE POSITION: Under supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director, this position is responsible for coordinating a complete and comprehensive academic support program for 15 intercollegiate teams. This position is responsible for monitoring student-athlete academic eligibility. This position will provide complex work in academic advisement for individuals and groups, as well as coordinate, plan, implement and maintain athletic tutorial and study hall programs. As part of this function the individual in this position shall assist in the recruitment and retention of casual workers who can help facilitate the student-athlete study hall program.
This position is responsible for monitoring student-athlete academic performance and persistence, by communicating academic policies and procedures, including NCAA eligibility requirements for student athletes. This person will communicate with and work to resolve student-athlete problems or conflicts with coaches, faculty and student-athletes concerning academic development and the pursuit of academic success.
The individual will collaborate with the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Support Services, Faculty Athletic Representative, and the Office of the Registrar to ensure that student athletes are in compliance with the NCAA's Progress Toward Degree requirements, monitoring the daily unit report, applying the athletic drop hold to student accounts, and other assigned duties. The individual will develop intervention strategies and resources for student-athletes that are in jeopardy of losing academic eligibility, including mid-semester faculty progress reports through the Bay Advisor, and referral to department/campus learning support services. Also, the person in this position will perform administrative and advising duties in support of retention, student success initiatives, and will develop strong working relationships with faculty, coaches, colleagues and academic department staff.
This position is responsible for compiling student-athlete and team academic honors at the conclusion of each term and/or sport season. This person is actively involved in the recruiting process through transcript evaluations for eligibility and admissibility, meets with prospective student-athletes on recruiting visits and is the liaison with admissions to monitor and coordinate the admissions process for student athletes. Additionally, this position also provides assistance and resources for student athletes regarding University policies and procedures, academic programs and other campus support services including being a liaison for appropriate communication with CSUEB's Counseling Center.
This position will also actively participate with the student-athlete experience through assisting with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Participation with SAAC shall include meeting with the SAAC members on a regular basis to ensure that the group is fulfilling their role as prescribed by the NCAA. Additionally, this person will also help in an advisory capacity to ensure that the SAAC members are completing the CSUEB SAAC's own identified outcomes, such as social gatherings, community engagement, student-athlete welfare improvement, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Academic Advising and Tutoring Services: * Responsible for independently performing day-to-day student-athlete academic advising, as well as the development and maintenance of the program. * Assist student-athletes in determining appropriate coursework in compliance with NCAA and CCAA rules. * Liaise with existing Student Support Services offered throughout campus (such as AACE, SCAA, Registrar, counseling center, etc.) to encourage utilization of additional services available in other departments. * Provide comprehensive advisement to assist student-athletes to identify their academic challenges, evaluate them realistically, and address their aptitudes and abilities related to their particular needs. * Meet with all prospective and incoming student-athletes to discuss CSU admission requirements. Complete initial advising of all incoming freshman and transfer students. * Maintain student-athlete tutoring and study hall program to ensure success of all student-athletes and for those who have been identified as at-risk academically. * Coordinate with head coaches to provide letters to instructors for missed class time as needed. * Utilize computer technology to maintain details and current records on each student athlete. * Maintain current knowledge of courses, majors, prerequisites, general education and graduation requirements, university procedures, rules and regulations and other student services. * Liaise with the office of admissions for all special admits. * Coordinate, and produce reports (or assigned portions thereof) such as, but not limited to, special admissions, priority registration list, institutional self-study guide, graduation rate, etc.
Student-Athlete Eligibility: * Monitor eligibility of all student-athletes including: initial eligibility, transfer eligibility, continuing eligibility and progress toward degree, while being the liaison with the specialized areas on campus of Student Advising, Admissions and Transfer Evaluations and the Registrar's Office. * Work with compliance coordinator, head and assistant coaches to monitor the NCAA Eligibility Center accounts for all student-athletes. * Assist in all sports recruiting efforts by meeting with prospective student-athletes to discuss NCAA eligibility rules, CSU admissions requirements, and academic support programs offered. * Conduct mid semester progress reports for student-athletes and coordinate distribution to coaches. Develop intervention protocols and procedures on an individual basis. * Attend team meetings and present information on CSU and NCAA academic requirements and eligibility information. * Generate semester priority registration list, monitor daily unit report in conjunction with the Assistant AD for Compliance, and apply holds to student accounts.
Student-Athlete Experience Support Coordination: * Serve as SAAC Advisor. Provide council with pertinent information involving student-athletes, discuss athletic department issues affecting student-athletes and services provided to the student athletes, and any relevant information involving the University and the NCAA. * Conduct meetings on a regular basis with all SAAC representatives from each team. Assist in developing key events for the student athlete experience to include but not limited to; welcome back BBQ, Winter social event, end of year awards show, Make-A-Wish and Team Impact coordination and fundraisers, etc. * Attend yearly CCA SAAC conference. * Serve as conduit for campus services/offices which might be needed to ensure student-athlete success and welfare. Examples include coordinating with the campus counseling center in regards to student-athletes who might be in need of services.
Continuing Professional Development and Committees: * Attend NCAA and CCA rules compliance workshops. * Involvement and participation with on-campus committees (such as Orientation Advisory Committee, PEMSA Advisory Committee, etc.) * Proactively review on-going operations to maximize overall effectiveness and efficiently of student-athlete academic support services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: * Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program involvements; ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews. * Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate date and make verbal or written presentations based on that data; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters, where required. * Ability to work with a diverse University community with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff members and coaches. * Working knowledge of NCAA, CCAA, and CSU rules and regulations regarding admission and student-athlete eligibility.
