The Senior Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (APER) is responsible for the overall leadership and management of development of a diverse set of athletics, physical education and recreation programs encouraging a lifelong commitment to health and fitness enabling a culture of a healthy campus. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Life, the Senior Director of APER is responsible for delivering quality athletics, physical education and recreation programs that enhance student development and learning and foster ongoing relationships with and for the students and other members of both internal and external communities.
Leadership and Management
Leads the development, planning, execution and promotion of a strong intramural, intercollegiate, tournament and summer camp athletics program
Develops and offers a variety of co-curricular physical education programs for undergraduate students to encourage them to incorporate health and fitness into their lives
Develops, maintains, and promotes recreational programs to all members of the University community and external stakeholders
Develops strategic goals and objectives as well as annual operating objectives ensuring that resources and the annual budget are optimally configured and deployed to achieve the best results in collaboration with the Associate Vice President
Recruits, manages and organizes staff and coaches; provides athlete and coach orientation
Assesses the quality of and student satisfaction with athletics, physical education and recreation programs
Collaborates with the relevant offices on the recruitment, retention, and scholarships of student-athletes, and on the publicity and reporting of athletic events and results
Monitors staff performance and development goals, assigns accountabilities and sets objectives
Budget, Resources and Athletics Facilities Management
Provides fiscal management of the athletics office budget
Oversees athletics facilities management, ensuring that facilities are maintained and equipped for athletic practices, events and competitions
Inspects facilities and equipment for cleanliness, safety, and upkeep.
Student Engagement & Safety
Creates a healthy and safe emotional environment, free of fear, discrimination, abuse and harassment
Prevents or reduces injury by developing strategies for recruiting competent coaches and medical screening
Ensures that the quality and quantity of medical care available to student-athletes is appropriate for the activities being conducted
Responsible for crisis response and the management and referral of critical incidents
Establishes safety and accident prevention guidelines and procedures
Make recommendations in matters of student athlete discipline; establish standards of dress and conduct for team travel, training and practice rules
Ensures student compliance with relevant policies, procedures and professional standards
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as recommended by the Associate Vice President.
Minimum education requirement:A Master’s degree is required
Senior management experience: Demonstrated success in building and managing collaborative teams; the ability to work collaboratively with others in a shared governance environment; 10 years of management experiences
Experience in working with students and young people; experience in athletics administration preferably in a university setting
Has excellent leadership skills and is able to manage people in complex interpersonal environments
Has knowledge of current practices in the delivery of university athletics programs
Has excellent communication skills and is able to effectively handle a full range of interpersonal interactions with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty
Has the ability to make clear, informed decisions
A collaborative leader with a proven track record for bringing groups together to meet objectives
A demonstrated capacity to work confidently and effectively in an international environment and a multicultural setting
Proficient in balancing multiple duties and responsibilities
Creativity in problem solving and programming
Has excellent organizational skills and attention to details
Highly effective in all aspects of crisis management, including the ability to work collaboratively with others in managing crises
Ability to manage budgets, resources and facilities
