The UBC Athletics and Recreation Department is dedicated to creating a healthy, active and connected community where each person is at their personal best and proud of their UBC experience. The department employs ~145 staff and ~750 student staff and has a budget of ~$37M to deliver upon the goals and aims of UBC Athletics & Recreation. The department is proud to have developed multiple Olympians and professional athletes as well as a thriving recreation and intramural programs which are steeped in tradition.
UBC Athletics and Recreation operates and maintains 10 fully functional, multi-use facilities and 13 playing fields. Annually, the facilities host well over 3 million visits spread over the nearly 1.5 million square feet of Athletic and Recreation space. Facilities are used to leverage over $15 million in revenue that supports the department. Collectively the facilities host a wide array of student, youth and community activities including: international sport events, varsity events, sport leagues (student, adult and youth), student events, instructional programs, fitness centres, sport camps, drop-in programs, concerts, learn-to programs, youth sport events and fundraising events.
The Role
Reporting to the Vice-President Students, the Managing Director, Athletics and Recreation (MD, A&R) provides leadership to varsity, high-performance, recreation programs, facilities and business operations in the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The MD, A&R will be responsible for delivering a balanced and forward-thinking strategy for the department which encompasses the needs and requirements of varsity, high-performance and recreational programs to continue and advance UBC’s proud traditional of excellence in recreation and sport.
The Individual
As the MD A&R you will be committed to Athletics and Recreation, have the capacity to lead strategic planning, have exemplary leadership and decision-making experience and be a value aligned professional capable of taking UBC Athletics and Recreation to the next level.
You will have a substantial record of progressive and relevant experience, including a minimum of ten years’ experience in a senior management capacity managing a large Athletics and Recreation Department or equivalent. This would be combined with an in-depth knowledge of amateur sport and the University sporting landscape.

This position is based at UBC’s Vancouver Campus.
