Assists in providing leadership and direction for an assigned area within the athletic department. Responsible for the development, coordination, and administration of the department. Responsible for employees in the assigned area.
Responsible for the continued success and future growth of the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy to engage a diverse population of student-athletes, staff and coaches; including:
Communication of leadership programming opportunities to coaches and sport administrators, pre- semester calendar of events and programming expectations and opportunities.
Establishment and communication of annual expectations of student-athletes across each academic year.
Implement strategic initiatives for the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy in alignment with the Athletics Department’s strategic plan.
Management of the J.T. & Margaret Talkington staff; including three directors, a post-graduate intern/coordinator & graduate/undergraduate student workers.
Develop Leadership Specific Programming, including:
High Impact Leadership Course (LDR 3300) and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee initiatives.
Serve as primary instructor for LDR 3300
Develop criteria and process for student-athlete and staff inclusion in both LDR & SAAC
Communicate internally to head coaches and executive staff on LDR course curriculum and programming to aligning course with departmental and student development goals.
Early identification of outstanding SA for planned leadership, awards and scholarship recognition.Oversite of IS 1200 Lifeskills Course, including:
Content, structure, campus partnerships and instruction.
Implement strategies for both internal & external communication around the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy (Website, Recruiting Brochure, Sharepoint).
Build leadership academy annual report for departmental purposes, including
Communication to coaches and J.T. & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy advisory board.
Promote communication through Teamworks, multiple social media outlets and email to inform, educate, and promote the JT & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy, both internally (TTU campus, Athletics Department, Student-Athletes) and externally (Board of Directors, NCAA, Big 12 & Peer Institutions).
Build a developmental approach to sports specific team-building, to include:
Input from coaches and assistant coaches.
Incorporate, track & engage outside experts within the overall approach of the J.T. & Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy.
Other duties as directed in support of the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy.
Comply with all NCAA, Big 12 and Texas Tech University rules, regulations and policies.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Three (3) years experience in an intercollegiate athletics department or other work experience that would demonstrate the necessary background and knowledge. Must have a working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
Minimum of 6– 8 years of professional experience in intercollegiate athletic administration, specifically with the unit of student-development, life-skills or student affairs.
Established programs and curriculum for student-athlete development initiatives.
Knowledge of college athletics administration, student affairs and/or student-athlete development programs.
Demonstrated administrative and supervisory skills.
Ability to conceptualize and prioritize goals and objectives, while developing and building relevant programming.
Experience in managing/supervising others.Ability to maintain good relations among numerous interest groups.
Skilled in all forms of communication.
Knowledge and familiarity with the student-athlete experience, high performing athletics programs and NCAA rules and regulations.
