The Richard Bland College of William and Mary invites applications for the Director of Athletics. The Director of Athletics is responsible for the effective leadership, vision, operation, management and funding of the Department of Athletics in its pursuit and support of the College’s mission, goals and objectives. In addition to overseeing athletic strategic planning and the development and management of the unit’s administrative and financial resources, the Director of Athletics is responsible for directing athletic activities, recruiting and assessing current and prospective coaches and staff, supervising the coordination of athletic events, managing athletic department budgets, and revenue development planning and fundraising for the department. The Director serves as liaison with sports conference or division administrators, such as those from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Offering six (6) NJCAA Division I competitive teams as part of the Region 10 Conference, the Department of Athletics dedicates itself to providing students with meaningful experiences both on and off the playing fields. This entails the education and development of the student athlete through, but not limited to, instruction on how to perform their sport, balance academic and athletic commitments, maintain health and work as an individual or team, and successfully integrate as part of the College and local community.
Primary Responsibilities include: •Provide visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the athletics program •Maintain an athletic program that is committed to the College’s mission and strategic priorities •In collaboration with stakeholders, develop and execute an athletics master plan that supports the mission and strategic priorities of the College with appropriate performance benchmarks for effectiveness; •Develop a fundraising plan and, in partnership with the Chief Development Officer, execute that plan to build Foundation revenue for athletics and the College •Direct all administrative, operation and business functions for the Athletic department •Recruit and manage the athletic staff, both coaches and administrative employees •Provide an environment supporting personal and professional growth for employees through mentoring, regular performance evaluation and constructive feedback •Collaborate with institutional and community colleagues to support College priorities, including academic success, retention, prevention of alcohol/drug use and sexual violence •Ensure compliance with all Richard Bland College, federal, national association and conference policies, rules and regulations, as well as all other laws, regulations, or policies affecting the athletic program •Carry out special assignments as directed by the Provost of the College
• Significant and progressively more responsible experience at an institution of higher education in an administrative, athletic-centric role, including budget management, staff supervision and development, facility management, and fund-raising • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with the following: – Current practices in delivery of athletic programs – Issues common to the student athlete and the athletic programs – Administrative budgeting and financial record-keeping and control procedures • Demonstrated supervisory experience • Experience in fundraising, donor stewardship and athletic development opportunities • Proven ability in human resource management, hiring, supervising, and evaluating personnel
