Job Purpose Towson University is accepting applications for a Media Relations Intern. The Media Relations Intern will serve as a member of the external leadership team; advising on strategic planning initiatives, and all aspects of the department's verbal, written, video and internet-based communication.
Description The Media Relations Intern will serve as the primary contact for coverage for sports as assigned by the Director of Athletics Media Relations. The intern also assists with game day duties at athletic events, and aides in creating content and helping furthering develop the initiatives in new/social media and multimedia on the department's official website Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing athletic press releases and statistics for website and media outlets; coverage of home events and special projects/events. Manages in-game scoring, statistics and game day operations for various sports. Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Media Relations.
Qualifications Bachelor's degree and one year of experience in the field of media relations, communications or public relations. Excellent skills in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and StatCrew statistical software. Experience in graphic design and layout preferably using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat; excellent professional verbal and written communication skills. Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality; to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations; strong knowledge of social media platforms; strictly adhere to NCAA, CAA and athletic department rules and regulations; support the athletic department's commitment to equity and diversity, as well as perform all duties with integrity and professionalism. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, coaches, and student-athletes from diverse ethnic, cultural and social-economic backgrounds; knowledge of latest media, public relations and communications trends and practices.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits $10.10 per hour and a contract that offers annual leave, holidays, sick days. Contractual employees scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage. The position is contingent on funds being available at time of hire.
