The Director of Graphic Design (Graphic Artist III) will be responsible for the visual brand of the Michigan State University Athletics Department across print, digital and video platforms, and facility graphics while ensuring consistency that is representative of the standards of the University. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Specialize in graphic design while assisting the Athletic Communications staff in day-to-day promotion of MSU’s 25 varsity sports
Manage small team of graphic design students
Produce infographics and web graphics for the official school athletics website, MSUSpartans.com, as well as various social media accounts
In-game duties for football and men’s basketball, including scoring update graphics, .gifs and monitoring social media accounts
Design selected media guide covers and internal layout
Manage social media integration across platforms and work with the Athletic Communications staff to create and implement social media and website campaigns that inform and inspire our wide-ranging and diverse audiences, including motion graphics and .gifs
Implement a consistent graphic identity and messaging across platforms and teams, in alignment with University and Athletics Department design standards. Ensure all visual materials adhere to brand styles
Collaborate with video producers to assist in generating ideas for similar designs for video boards and broadcast shows
Collaborate across the external relations team, including Athletic Communications, Sales & Marketing, Ticket Office, Spartan Fund and athletic teams

A bachelor’s degree plus at least three years of relevant and progressively more expansive work experience in graphic design, illustration, 3D design, fine arts, visual art, communications, photography, film/television, related field or equivalent experience. Familiar with both PC and Mac platforms. High level of proficiency in creating graphics via Adobe Creative Suite and its online publishing platforms (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere and Flash). Strong design and typography sense.
Experience working with collegiate athletics. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Focus on accuracy and attention to detail. Must be well-organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines. Schedule flexibility – willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed. Must be open to feedback and willing to make changes to your designs. Ability to lead projects from concept to completion. Ability to work with, and provide for, a wide range of stakeholders – from fans and donors, to alumni and prospective student-athletes. Basic HTML programming experience.
