The West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Learning Specialist. The position will provide individualized time management support, and foster organizational and academic success skills to student-athletes.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Facilitate student-athletes' development as self-regulated learners within the guidelines, rules and regulations of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA.
Develop a supportive, individualized approach for assisting students academically.
Assist student-athletes in social and emotional areas that impact learning by assessing their needs and making appropriate referrals when necessary.
Work with the student on remediation of fundamental skills needed for academic success by providing academic support services with study skills, note taking, time management skills, test-taking strategies and literacy skill development.
Provide assistance/additional instruction for academic course work, including help with organizing, planning, editing and revising assignments, preparation for exams, and developing strategies to help the student complete assigned coursework independently.
Perform other job related duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development or Associate Director of Student-Athlete Development.
Minimum one (1) year of relevant experience in secondary or post-secondary educational setting
Knowledge of a wide range of learning strategies and study skills development
Knowledge and training in working with individuals with diagnosed learning disabilities, including ADHD, learning disorders, communication disorders and/or processing disorders
Demonstrated ability to interact with individuals from diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
Knowledge of secondary or higher education system and of counseling/advising of student-athletes, preferably at the NCAA Division I level
Demonstrated knowledge of Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines and regulations
